Transition Year
Grade eight is known as a transition year because students will be required to move towards becoming independent learners. They are expected to take responsibility for their own learning and behaviour. In grade 8, we will help them make a connection to their community and the world around them. An important aspect of this year , is to develop critical thinking skills that will help them to prepare for the demands of High School in Grade 9. Student Organizer Students are expected to record due dates for all assignments, tests, and important information in the student organizer. To help your child to succeed, check it regularly for due dates. Students experiencing difficulties may have their organizers signed by teachers and parents to keep track of their progress more closely. Behaviour contracts and homework books are also utilized by staff to help those individuals that are experiencing difficulties.
Letters HomeWhen students experience difficulties, teachers will contact parents through a letter or phone call. Parents that receive letters, please read over carefully, sign it, and have the student return it the next school day. Open communication between the school and home is very important. Students need to know that we are working together!
Activities
Students who are up-to-date in their school work and demonstrate responsible and appropriate behavior, earn the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities. Activities include IMAX, Manitoba Museum, dances, special events, extracurricular school activities etc.
Extra Curricular School Activities Encourage your son/daughter to become involved in a school activity i.e. musical production, inter-school athletics, intramurals, yearbook, various clubs, etc. It will help your child make a connection to the school and it will make grade eight a fun year!
Grade 8 Leadership Team Grade eight students will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills in a variety of ways. Students will be involved in helping to organize and run the grade eight intramural program by refereeing, score keeping and equipment set-up and take -down. Other opportunities will include helping the elementary school in our area with special events and activities, as well as helping with activities in their homerooms. These leadership members help in other rooms in the school being reading and math buddies. Students must maintain a "B" average and regular attendance in leadership, to remain a part of the leadership team. Application forms for the Grade 8 Leadership Team will be available from
Mr. Harbeck or Ms. Lee
2 Minutes to Make a Difference All Grade eight students will be participating in a large year long project. The student's final project is a 2 minute video. This video will be shown to parents during Student Led Conferences this year in April. Students are able to work in groups of up to 4 participants. The students will learn how to start to think locally on how they can make a difference and then take what they have learned to a global cause. Developing student citizenship is an important part of being a Grade eight student at Sargent Park School.
The movie project is worth 20% of their third term mark for all core subjects (Math, LA, Science and Social Studies) Here is an example of what was done last year. We know that this years students will take up the challenge
Please contact your students homeroom or subject area teacher if you have any concerns.
